Learn the lingo

Barber words in plain language, so you can ask for exactly the cut you want.

Fade

Hair gets gradually shorter down the sides and back, often all the way to skin, with no visible line.

Ask for it Say where it starts (low, mid or high) and how short it finishes: skin, or a guard number.

Taper

A fade kept to the edges. Only the sideburns and neckline go short; the sides keep more length.

Ask for it Ask for a taper when you want a clean edge that grows out softly.

Line-up

A crisp outline along the hairline (forehead, temples, sideburns and neck) done with a trimmer or razor. Also called an edge-up or shape-up.

Ask for it Say whether to follow your natural hairline or sharpen it.

Blend

The transition between two lengths, cut so you can’t see where one stops and the next starts.

Ask for it If you can see a line between lengths, ask for it to be blended.

Guard number

The clip-on comb that sets clipper length. A #1 leaves about 1/8 inch (3 mm); each number adds about 1/8 inch, up to 1 inch (25 mm) at #8.

Ask for it Name the number if you know it. Brands vary slightly, so it’s a starting point.

Common guard lengths, #1 to #8

Skin fade

A fade that finishes at bare skin, usually with a foil shaver or razor. Also called a bald fade.

Ask for it Say how high you want the skin to go.

Texture

Cutting on top that breaks up weight, so the hair has movement and definition.
