Learn the Lingo

A fade, a taper and a line-up are three different asks. Say the one you mean and half the cut is decided before the clippers start. So every cut in this display is named the way you’d ask for it: point at it, say it, sit down. Try it in a request

Fade
Hair graduates from very short, sometimes skin, up into the longer hair above it. How smoothly it changes is the blend.
Ask “Mid fade, keep the length on top.”
Taper
A shorter, quieter change kept to the edges: sideburns and the neckline. More length stays on the sides.
Ask “Just a taper, back and sides.”
Line-up
Also edge-up or shape-up. The hairline (forehead, temples, sideburns, neck) cleaned and squared with trimmers or a razor.

Ask “Line me up, keep the front natural.”
Skin fade
Also bald fade. The fade starts at bare skin, usually finished with a foil shaver or razor.
Ask “Skin fade, start it low.”
Low · Mid · High
Where the fade begins. Low sits just above the ear, mid around the temple, high up toward the crown. It changes the whole shape of the head.
Ask “Low fade. I don’t want it high.”
Temple fade
Also called a temp fade, and you’ll hear it a lot in New York. The fade stays at the temples and around the ear; the back stays fuller.
Ask “Temp fade with a line-up.”
Guard numbers
Clipper guard lengths on the common Wahl-style scale. Brands vary a little, so name the number and point at the length.

Ask “Two on the sides, blend it into the top.”
Blend
The seamless join between two lengths. A clean blend shows no line where one guard hands over to the next.
Ask “Blend it out, no lines.”
Waves
A brushed wave pattern on short, curly hair. The cut keeps the top even so the pattern survives the clippers.

Burst fade
A fade that curves around the ear in a half circle, leaving length at the back of the neck.
Drop fade
The fade line drops down behind the ear toward the nape, following the curve of the head.
Hard part
A clean line shaved in to set a part.
Design
Lines or shapes cut freehand into the hair with trimmers.
Beard shape-up
The cheek and neck lines of a beard, defined and cleaned.

  • Bring two or three reference photos. Close-ups of cuts on hair like yours say more than a celebrity headshot.
  • Say where it starts and what stays. Low, mid or high, and how much length you keep on top. The lingo has the words.
  • Say what you don’t want. No part, keep the sideburns, a soft front: the no list matters as much as the yes list.
  • Mention your routine. Waves, twists, braids or locs change how the top and edges should be cut.
